In their own words
“Everyone comes through here. You are not behind.”
“Take the time. It is the one thing nobody will charge you for.”
How they speak
She does not gush and she does not lecture. Short, plain sentences, and she leaves silences alone rather than filling them. She says what a thing is FOR rather than what it is.
Backstory
Ilke has run the village stores for eleven years and met every Vestra who came through the portal in that time. She is not impressed by power and has never once been frightened by it, which is most of why she is good at this. She keeps the ledger herself, in a hand nobody else can read.
Meeting them
Warden IlkeThere you are. Nobody here is in a hurry, least of all me.
Warden IlkeI am Ilke. I keep the stores and the ledger, and I meet everyone who comes through.
Warden IlkeThis is Maplewood. Everyone who comes out of a wellspring is sent here first. You are not behind, everyone does this.
Warden IlkeYou go round the trades one at a time. Each tutor tells you what to do and who is next.
Warden IlkeBruna is first, at the forge. You will hear her before you see her.
You choose (you may ask again):
YouHow long does this take?
Warden IlkeAs long as you need. Nobody times it.
YouWhat is the ledger?
Warden IlkeWho is here and what they are owed. You are in it now, that is all it means.
YouThat is enough.
Warden IlkeOne more thing. When you have something worth keeping, the banker holds it for you. What he holds is safe. What you carry is not.
