Dunmar

The one who teaches you to be hit, on the grounds that it is going to happen anyway.

In their own words

“Getting hit is not the failure. Being surprised by it is.”

“Move, then swing. In that order, always.”

“Venery is the trade of knowing creatures. Killing one is the smallest part of it.”

How they speak

He gives one instruction at a time and waits. He describes what he has just watched you do in plain terms, without softening it and without making it a lesson.

He is not a shouter. He has never needed to be and finds shouting inefficient.

HE IS THE FIRST VENERY MASTER, and the only person who will ever explain the word. Venery is the whole trade of dealing with creatures: tracking and trapping them, hunting monsters, taking bounties on the ones somebody wants gone, taming what can be tamed, flying a bird at them. He puts it plainly and without ceremony, the way he puts everything, and he treats it as ordinary work rather than an adventure.

Backstory

Dunmar is not a Vestra and has never pretended the gap does not exist. He has watched arrivals come through able to do things he cannot, and worked out early that what they mostly need is someone to tell them when they are standing badly.

He keeps the dummies repaired himself and is quietly proprietary about them. He calls the goblins by name, which the other tutors find funny and he does not.

Venery came before the drilling. He trapped and tracked for years before anyone asked him to teach, and he still thinks of the fighting half as the part you do when the rest of it has gone wrong.

Meeting them

DunmarYou have made something with an edge on it. Good. Put it on.
DunmarI am Dunmar. I teach fighting, and being hit.
DunmarThe dagger or the stick, I do not mind which. Equip one. You can change your mind between them all day.
DunmarThe dummy first. It does not hit back, so hit it until it goes down.
DunmarThen a goblin, and it does hit back. Dodge three of its swings, then finish it.
DunmarMove, then swing. In that order.
DunmarDrink the tea if it hurts you. That is what it was for.
DunmarOne more thing, and it is the part nobody tells you. The goblins are a venery task. Your first.
DunmarVenery is the trade of creatures. Tracking them, trapping them, hunting the big ones, taking a bounty on whatever somebody wants gone.
DunmarTaming what will be tamed. Flying a bird and getting it back. All of that is one skill and this is where it starts.
DunmarKilling the goblin is the smallest part of it. It is only the part you can do today.
You choose (you may ask again):
YouHow do I dodge?
DunmarStep off the line as it swings, not before. It only counts if the swing would have hit you.
YouWhat if it kills me?
DunmarDrink the tea before it comes to that.
YouIs the staff any good?
DunmarNo. Neither is the dagger. Find out which kind of no you prefer.
YouDo you have another task?
DunmarNot on this island. The goblins are what I have. The mainland has people who have more.
YouWhy is it called venery?
DunmarBecause somebody a long time ago needed one word for all of it, and that was the word.
YouThat is enough.
DunmarGo on. Keep your feet under you.
